Written when Cathy Coote was nineteen, Innocents is a taut, wickedly clever descent into the anatomy of an obsession, the debut of a precociously assured and provocative young literary voice. The book is written in the form of a letter that the girl is writing to her ex-lover to explain her side of things.

Who knew that innocence is a great weapon when it comes to the game of sex and desire? This Lolitaseed of evil, who’s also the protagonist isn’t even likable. You trapped a 30 something man in your web and coots he’s stuck because he’s ensnared by your golden and youthful lady parts.
Forcing someone vulnerable and naive into a sexual relationship to satisfy a twisted desire is perverted, even evil. Her uncle she’s orphaned, imagine that finds her sketch book, casts her aside, forcing her to conveniently skip off to move in with the bookish teacher that lives a block or so over. It’s written sort of as a letter. Instead, their one-time fallout lasts for two or so pages before the relationship is rebuilt.
Blundering around inside catby own instincts, handicapped. Everything she says and does is a direct manipulation meant to keep him focused on her and her needs alone.

The narrator is writing her “truth” to her former lover. Lolita, bless her, was a little girl with her chest puffed up big and brave, but she was so broken from the start. My instincts were vicious, predatory, from the start. Pulled in by the darker subject matter and the short length, I’m glad I didn’t have to devote more time to this, but would have happily done so given a little more depth and a little less repetition.
It reeks of teenage prestige and self-importance. As it happens, in Australia, where this story takes place, the age of consent EXCEPT for student-teacher relationships is 16, which acthy for interesting fodder for debate about what is appropriate according to differing rules.

While repetitive at times, the writing is generally phenomenal. However, I felt like the teacher was the prey and the teenager girl was the predator in this book. It was a story about a 16 year old girl who manages to seduce and manipulate her 34 year old teacher with her skilled acting-the feigned innocence, naivety and inexperience-and takes them both-along with the readers-through a story of lust and self destruction.
Instead, I just found myself rolling my eyes waaaay too much. But, later I found out that in Australia, where this story takes place, the age of consent is This is a VERY sexual book. This story is not for everyone, and I believe many people will have difficulty identifying with the characters, given their eccentricities. He really puts on her a pedestal and becomes obsessed with her, but from afar. Never did she know her Darling would somehow become her escape from all that’s gone wrong.
And I’m sharing that with you all because I cannot suffer it alone. It was a novel about seduction, mani Innocents is probably one of the most complicated, intense and disturbing book I’ve ever read.
As I began writing the letter, I noticed my style mimicked hers: So enamored by her is he, that he quits his job, rents them a new house and takes her away from her life. We have a 16 year old girl who is, by her own diagnosis, out of her mind, perverse, a sadist – because she likes to draw her classmates naked and being violated violently. The characters never face real challenges, not even in the graphic, ha If I based my review on the writing alone, Innocents would get four stars.
However, it was written by a 19 year old. Jul 14, Meha rated it it was amazing.
So why not just 1-star? He replaces her incessant need to draw sexual violence cooet that was a really weak plot point for meand since she no longer has to worry about hovering over her sketchpad at all hours of the day and night, she, in turn, focuses all of her strength and cunning on making him putty in her hands by intentionally playing up her youth catuy sexuality. Far too often I read books that merely end without much of a conclusion.
