Because the site began Gaviotas, the sustainable intentional community in Columbia, gets five stars. Rebuilding the forest and multiple solar energy solutions and then applying their creations to help the poor. Readability aside, I agree with other reviewers here that the substance of the story is remarkable. Rebuilding I am glad I overlooked the poor writing style and loose ends and read the entire book because the story is fascinating and instructive.

Since already-existing solutions are often very costly to adapt, Gaviotas’ innovations are often simple changes to a means of production that make otherwise expensive products available at affordable prices.

Their terraformation of the llanos allows Gaviotas to thrive, but it is not an example of low impact ecology practiced by many eco-villages. Really interesting look at the creation of a very purposeful community from scratch.
